Silverstone Classic 2017
The Silverstone Classic 2017 is largest Classic Motor Racing Festival in the world. It attracts over 100,000 visitors over the 3 day weekend event.
More than 1,000 of the most valuable and revered competition cars from yesteryear attend the meeting. This year 22 races were held around the full Silverstone Grand Prix circuit to entertain the crowds of spectators. It still amazes me the wheel to wheel action of the drivers in these cars are worth millions of pounds. These cars were built to be driven & hard for the that coverted top step on the podium.
Plenty to see…
There is plenty to see & do over these 3 days, both on & off the track. Many owners clubs attend the meeting bringing along their cherished cars to put on display. You can find anything from old car parts, models of yesteryear, magazine collections to motorsport memorabilia, in the tented merchandise village. If it’s driving you’ve come to see, then you will be entertained for every minute of the day. There are driving demonstrations & parades as well as all the high speed action on the track. This year saw a World Record number of more than 120 McLaren supercars on track at any one time!! Plenty of motorsport photography opportunities for the professional & amateur motorsport photographer alike.
My working brief…
This year I was working for Forza Historic Racing Team following their drivers & technicians throughout their race weekend. It was brilliant to watch the mechanics as they prepared the Historic F1 cars & Sports cars to go out on track. The work on the cars never stops, attention to every minute detail is great to watch. You can’t help being caught up in the excitement when attached to a team…& their celebrations at having at least one driver on the podium of every race they entered!!!
Highlights of the Silverstone Classic 2017….
One of the highlights for me was again, the spectacular Le Mans style Group C cars. So I was thrilled to be asked to cover these former Le Mans cars as a follow up feature to my shoot last month at the 24Hrs of Le Mans for LMP Racer Magazine. The noise they make is a delight in itself. By some incredible fluke of fate we had rain twice over the 3 days…it landed on both Group C races!! Driving a powerful Group C car must be hard enough as it is, without fighting for grip on wet tarmac. On Sunday the rain was even worse than what arrived on Saturday. I know it was hellish for the drivers….but the spray ‘Rooster Tails’ off the rear wings were simply awesome!! The drivers weren’t able to push hard & so sadly no bright red glow from their brake discs into Luffield this year.
This year we were treated to the sight & I have to say for me, the sound.. of Nigel Mansell’s iconic Red 5 Williams FW14B Formula 1 car doing a few demonstration laps. It was stunning to see this car back on a race circuit. Modern f1 cars though technically incredible machines, but they seem to have lost some of their magic. That magic for me came out of the exhaust pipes at an incredible decibel level
I was grateful to be asked along to photography the event & be attached to Masters Historic F1 drivers Nick Padmore, Max Smith-Hillard & Phil Hall. Having such close access to Nick & his team at Forza Historic Racing was great to get a sense of what goes into a race weekend.
I hope you enjoy looking through this collection of photos from the meeting.
